How do I find out which RAM my laptop or PC needs?
Use the Dolgix RAM Compatibility Checker: pick your device category, brand and model to see the supported memory type, speeds, sizes, pins and maximum memory. You can also check your device manual or the label on your existing RAM module.
What is the difference between DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5?
They are different generations of memory and are not interchangeable. Each has a different notch position and pin count (desktop DIMMs: DDR3 has 240 pins, DDR4 and DDR5 have 288; laptop SO-DIMMs: DDR3 has 204, DDR4 has 260, DDR5 has 262). Newer generations are faster and more power efficient, but your device only accepts the generation it was built for.
Is laptop RAM different from desktop RAM?
Yes. Laptops use the smaller SO-DIMM form factor and desktops use full-size DIMMs. They do not fit each other's slots, so always choose the form factor that matches your device.
How much RAM do I need?
As a general guide, 8GB suits everyday browsing and office work, 16GB suits multitasking and most gaming, and 32GB or more suits video editing, design and heavy workloads. Your device also has a maximum supported memory, which the compatibility checker shows.
Can I use RAM with a higher speed than my system supports?
Usually yes. The module normally runs at the highest speed your system supports, so you will not get the module's full rated speed, but it will generally work. Check the supported speeds in the compatibility checker first.
What do 1Rx8 and 2Rx8 mean in the compatibility table?
They describe how a module is built. The first number is the rank (1R is single rank, 2R is dual rank) and x8 is the width of each memory chip. Some systems support only certain combinations, so use the sizes the checker marks as compatible.
Can I mix RAM of different brands, speeds or sizes?
It often works, but it is not guaranteed. Mixed modules run at the speed of the slowest one, and mismatches can cause instability. For best results, use matching modules, ideally a pair or kit of the same size and speed. You can never mix different generations such as DDR3 and DDR4.
How do I install RAM?
Shut down the device and unplug it (remove the battery if it is removable). Touch a metal part of the case to discharge static. Line up the notch on the module with the slot, then press firmly until the side clips click, or the laptop module sits flat. Close the case and start the device.
Why is my computer not showing all the RAM I installed?
Common reasons are a 32-bit operating system (which can use only about 4GB), memory shared with integrated graphics, a module that is not fully seated, or a motherboard or BIOS limit on total memory. Reseat the module and check the maximum memory for your model.
My device does not start after installing new RAM. What should I do?
Switch off and reseat the module, making sure it is fully clicked in. Try one module at a time, and try a different slot. Confirm the module type and speed are supported by your model. If the problem continues, contact us and we will help.
How do I make a warranty or RMA claim?
